Ms. Martinez has more than 25 years of financial management experience in the areas of financial analysis, strategic planning and business planning. She has worked in an array of multinational corporations with a focus on Latin America before taking on her current position at Florida International University, the eighteenth largest public university in the United States.
As associate vice president for financial planning and strategic development at FIU, Ms. Martinez oversees the development, planning and monitoring of the university’s $700 million operating budget. Additionally, Ms. Martinez oversees the office of strategic development which is the long term strategic planning arm of the university responsible for business planning, revenue generation analysis, legislative analysis, and strategic initiatives planning.
Since joining FIU in 2005, Ms. Martinez has been in the forefront of bringing analytical rigor and strategic thinking to the university. She led a variety of projects which have served to advance the strategic mission of the university and include:
- created a faculty funding model which included a priority matrix by discipline that allocated funding based on the university’s strategic goals;
- produced the business plan for the new College of Medicine that identified investment requirements and local economic development impact and, subsequently, led the team that created the base operating infrastructure necessary to receive preliminary accreditation;
- led the planning team that produced a three-year organizational budget reduction and stabilization strategy to address the multiyear recurring state driven appropriations shortfall;
Prior to joining FIU, Ms. Martinez served as Financial Planning Manager at Visa International Latin America & Caribbean, where she was responsible for the annual operating plans and analysis of over 33 countries and led the implementation of the Division’s management information system. Prior to that, Ms. Martinez was the Finance Manager for the Latin American Division of Atex, Inc. a subsidiary of Eastman Kodak Company where she was responsible for the financial operations of that division and undertook various projects including opening a wholly owned subsidiary in Brazil. She has also worked with Merrill Lynch and Acer International.
Ms. Martinez holds a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University in Management Information Systems with a minor in Business Administration. She received a Master’s of Science degree in Finance from Florida International University where she earned the outstanding graduate award. She also holds a Certified Financial Planner license.
