The Accounting & Reporting Services department in the Office of the Controller facilitates merchant services for self-sustaining departments which anticipate the acceptance of credit card payments for goods and/or services.
Merchant Services serves as the liaison between the department and Bank of America. Our goal is to assist with the initial set-up process and provide guidance and support in adhering to the University's policies, procedures, and maintaining compliance with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) requirements.
Cardholder data is of high value to malicious individuals because the information can be used to generate factious payment cards and process fraudulent transactions. Therefore, a merchant must ensure that appropriate safeguarding measures are in place to protect cardholder data.
The PCI DSS is a set of comprehensive requirements for enhancing cardholder data security (intended to help organizations proactively protect cardholder data) that was developed by the founding payment brands of the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council. All merchants and service providers are required to comply with the PCI DSS. Failure to comply with the PCI DSS may result in significant fines, legal liability, reputation damage and loss of business.
