Charlene is the Assistant Vice President and Interim Controller at Florida International University. As Interim Controller, she oversees a staff of 115 in Financial Support Systems, Financial Reporting, Tax Services, Student Accounting Systems & Bursar, Purchasing Services, Accounts Payable, Cash Management, General Accounting, Pro-Card Administration and Travel.
Charlene came to FIU in August 2006 and has held the positions of Senior Accounting Manager, Sponsored Research and Financial Aid; Director of Sponsored Research and Federal Funds Accounting; Assistant Vice President Financial Planning; and Assistant Vice President, Deputy Controller before stepping into the role of Interim Controller. Prior to joining FIU Charlene was the Assistant Director for Cost Analysis at the University of Oklahoma and the Director of Grants and Contract Administration at Texas State University. She has combined accounting/finance experience of over 20 years with 10 years university experience. She also has held accounting positions in the Texas A&M System office.
Charlene is a certified public accountant, certified research administrator, certified fraud examiner and holds a BA from Ball State University and an MBA from the University of Houston. In her career Charlene has had experience in managing accounting offices, accounting systems, industry and university costing, university/industry partnerships, development of policies and procedures both in accounting and sponsored research, interpreting OMB Circulars, Audit Reports and IRS guidelines.
Charlene is a member of the National Council of University Research Administrators, NCURA, Southeast Conference of College Cost Accountants, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the South Florida Chapter of Certified Fraud Examiners. She is certified by the State Board of Texas as a CPA. She is a frequent presenter on University Service Centers and Audits of Universities at NCURA conferences. She recently served as a Faculty Member for NCURA, Financial Administration Workshops and is Dean of the post award curriculum for NCURA’s mid level management on-line tutorial. In addition she is the author of the Summary of University Audits, Settlements and Investigations located on the University Cost Accounting Listserv at www.costaccounting.org. |
